Valletta Feasts and Church Celebrations

There are some twenty five churches in Valletta. During the patron’s feast these churches are richly decorated with damask wall coverings and silver candelabras. On the feast days, streets are decorated with colourful statues of angels and saint, lights and decorated cloth banners. Band marches and outdoor concerts are held days before the procession. These festivities culminate in an extravagant display of fireworks that can generally be seen from miles away.

Latin Jazz in Valletta

On Wednesday 16 April at 8pm, Teatru Manoel in collaboration with the German Embassy in Malta proudly presents a Latin Jazz concert entitled Vida Pura.

This ensemble, which has toured in Columbia, China and Germany, brings together the world renowned musicians Sebastian Schunke – piano (Berlin); Olvido – vocals (Cuba Berlin); Lukmil Perez – drums (Cuba Paris); Felepe Cabrera – bass (Cuba Paris); El Indio – trumpet (Cuba Berlin). These Grammy award winning artistes fuse the intense energy of their home cultures to create music which merges the boundaries of classical music and Latin rhythms.

This evening promises to entice the audience with music that is structured but spontaneous, familiar yet exotic in a Latin Jazz environment.

“The jazz element seems to shimmer between the main stream and avant guard, immeasurably enhanced by rhythmic excitement introduced through Schunk’s masterly use of extravagant time signatures…” (quepasa-magazine). These musicians career have been welcomed by the intriguing comments of critics and audiences alike.

Metropolitan opera star for Malta concert

The celebrated American mezzo-soprano Kate Aldrich, who has taken the world of opera by storm with her stunning performances at the Metropolitan Opera House and other prestigious venues, will be the guest artiste in a concert organised by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra at the Manoel Theatre on April 22.

The repertoire will include well known arias from Carmen, La Favorita, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Damnation de Faust, La Clemenza di Tito, Werther and La Cenerentola.

The relatively young mezzo soprano created a sensation when she appeared as Amneris in Franco Zeffirelli’s production of Verdi’s Aida on the commemoration of the centennial of the composer’s death in 2001 in Busseto, Italy. This production was seen on RAI television and later released on DVD. Her other DVD releases include a concert with Roberto Alagna & Friends, Massenet’s Werther and Don Quichotte, Strauss’s Salome and Benvenuto Cellini by Berlioz.

Ms Aldrich made her Metropolitan Opera debut as Maddalena in Rigoletto. She has also appeared as Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia in Dusseldorf, and Meg Page in Falstaff. She arrives in Malta after singing the role of Elizabeth in Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda in San Diego, California and Lucrezia Borgia, at the Teatro Regio, Turin, Italy.

• The concert, which starts at 8 p.m. and will be conducted by Michael Laus. Tickets may be obtained by phone on 2124 6389 or by e-mail: bookings@teatrumanoel.com.mt.

Birgu by Candlelight

The fourth edition of Birgu By Candlelight.

Festival – 12th October 2007

Among its innovative aspects is the World War II theme that is running through the entertainment around the event. Artistic and cultural activities, including the three-hour show on a stage in the main square, are being linked to the subject, featuring post- and pre-war tunes, dance and projectionsVittoriosa, which has already benefitted from a facelift over the years, takes on magical charm when the lights are out and the narrow, winding streets are illuminated by flickering candles.

Short music, theatre and dance performances will be held on the streets, offering an element of surprise, while visitors can also experience a discovery tour around the town.

A ghost tour, as well as tours of Vittoriosa and its military fortifications are being organised.

The event which is firmly anchored in the country’s cultural calendar, and is being held from 7 p.m. till midnight, also includese historical re-enactments.

Birgu, also known as Vittoriosa is one of the so called 3 cities, together with Senglea and Cospicua. Being so close to the natural Grand Harbour it was often considered a maritime town even by the Knights of St. John way back in the 16 th Century. Birgu was in fact the first place where the Knights settled when they arrived in Malta in 1535.
